THE PERFORMERS

The Newtowners photoThe Newtowners

Colm Daly learned Old Time fiddle tunes during
his many trips to the Southern Appalachians in search
of authentic mountain music. Since settling in Reading
and founding the band they have incorporated many
of these tunes into their local pub gig repertoire which
is a distinctive hallmark of the band. The Newtowners
bring together a wealth of experienced local talent
having Andy Olver (on mandolin) and Terry Pearce (on bass) and Cathy Marsden (ukulele/guitar). “You Can’t Say
We’re Not Different” is their motto and never a truer word said, for the sheer breath of their repertoire from Appalachian
to modern classics is to say the least quite unique.

Dolly And The Clothespegs

Dolly and the Clothespegs are a sort of supergroup composed of Reading musicians who have various other more noisy bands on the go, but enjoy a good old-timey party band on the side. They have  been known to play incongruous pop, rock and disco covers in a country stylee, but have more recently been picking songs from the Alan Lomax penguin book of popular American folksongs, which was purchased by Dolly's dad in the 60s. In the 70s she scribbled on it in green crayon, but in the last couple of years has realised what a goldmine of songs it is. So tonight they'll be mostly playing a selection of their favourites; tunes about Cocaine, Bums, Whiskey, Trains, death, prisons, you know, all those typical wholesome old American themes.

The Reatreat Singers photoThe Retreat Singers

Nicole Johnson's music background began in American Gospel music: a tradition of rich cappella harmonies, spirituals, anthems and contemporary music, within which most of her family are still very active today.  Since settling in Reading, Nicole has recruited and established The Retreat Singers, stretching that tradition into a fully fledged modern choir.  Each member is a singer in their own right, either as solo performers or band members.  Each brings their own unique contribution , whether from Scottish, Irish, English or more modern sources and have featured recently on BBC Radio Berkshire. Nicole's new status as a mum means that little Peter is already rehearsing in the tradition for the next generation.
Tonight, the Retreat Singers will perform a selection of Southern Gospel songs, including instantly recognisable pieces from the film, 'O Brother Where Art Thou?'. You will also hear songs from the bottomless well of great Gospel tradition rooted in the Deep South.  The Retreat Singers are: Joy Needham, Sarah Lucas, Sarah O'Donnell, Linda Trenchard, Cathy Marsden and Nicole Johnson.
